Volunteer Profile: Administrator

Admin Volunteer: Val

What is your role and what does it involve?

I work in fundraising & admin at Cheltenham Animal Shelter. I assist with a wide variety of tasks from producing documents to envelope stuffing!

I also help out during the holidays with the Animal Days and also at fundraising events such as the Christmas Fair.

Why did you decide to volunteer?

I have now retired and want to do something useful. I live in a block of flats that does not allow pets so I like contact with the animals here. I have had a wonderful dog, cats and a rabbit in the past and I really value the work done here.

What is the most rewarding aspect of your volunteering?

Knowing that I have helped to keep things going, even in a small way I have also met some really great people here and made some real friends.

Tell us about a highlight of your volunteering?

I really enjoyed helping at the summer Open Day last year with my new friend Rosie. We had a great system going on the barbeque, and had lots of fun too!

How has volunteering helped you personally? What does it mean to you?

It has helped me personally as I really enjoy coming in every week, and the people I work with are so kind and appreciative of my help. It is easy to become cut off and lonely when you retire and my volunteering has really enriched my life. It mean a lot to me and helps me maintain my self-esteem.

What is the one thing you would tell someone else about volunteering?

That it is a really worthwhile thing to do!
