About us

Cheltenham Animal Shelter is a charity that has been helping animals for nearly 100 years. We rescue and re-home unwanted and abandoned stray cats, dogs and small animals from across Gloucestershire.

Caring today and in the future

Our story began when two local ladies started taking in stray cats in the late 1800’s. Cheltenham Animal Shelter was formed almost 100 years ago at a premises in Leckhampton to care for more companion animals and we moved to our current site in 1939.

We are a member of the Association of Dogs and Cats Homes and we adhere to, and exceed, their code of practice. In doing that we are very careful to ensure that each and every animal receives the love and care it needs before going to its forever home.

Education is key to what we do, and so we spend time in our local community or invite groups to the Shelter for activities and workshops about responsible pet ownership.

Our Mission

“To provide shelter for homeless domestic animals whilst attempting to locate appropriate new homes. We also aim to educate members of the public in correct and appropriate animal husbandry through humane education programmes”

We rely on the generosity of our supporters to meet our £1m annual running costs

Each day we have an average of 70 animals at our site and we also help animals in our local community.

All of our work is funded by donations from our generous supporters, events, grants, and the wonderful gifts in Wills left to us by animal lovers.
