Giving up your pet
Advice and support when you can no longer care for your pet.
If you need to find a new home for your pet, our team will support you and your pet through the process.
However, before making your decision, please contact us for support as our experienced team are on hand to offer advice. We provide a pet food bank, behaviour advice, and have low-cost vet treatment at CASVet to help keep you and your pet together.
If you feel that you may be able to keep your pet but need some support, please contact our Reception Team on reception@gawa.org.uk and they will pass your enquiry to the relevant person.
Please do not abandon your pet. Not only is this very traumatic for them and can be dangerous or a risk to their health or life, it also means that when they come to us we don’t know their history, which makes it a lot harder to find them a new home.

Cheltenham Animal Shelter is currently receiving a high volume of requests to help pets. If we are unable to help at the current time we may need to add your pet to a waiting list, offer support or advice, or recommend other rehoming centres for you to try.
Giving up your pet
If you need to rehome your pet, our dedicated team will be there for you and your pet throughout the process. There is no charge for giving up your pet to us. If you would like to make a donation to help with our costs then we would be very grateful, but our priority is providing the very best care for all concerned.
- Complete the relevant form via the links above. Once we have received your request to give up your pet, we may contact you to ask for further information and to seek medical history. If we are able to help your pet, we will book an appointment for you to bring your pet in and sign them over into our care.
- On the day of your appointment, our team will meet you and your pet in our reception, and you will be asked to sign a form to legally transfer your pet into our ownership. You are welcome to bring your pets favourite toys, blankets/food and treats to help settle them in but don’t worry if you are unable to do so as we will provide all of this for them.
- Once your pet is in the care of the Shelter, they will be looked after by our expert Animal Care Team, along with our dedicated Animal Care Volunteers. Our team will ensure that they settle in their kennel/pen, have a cosy bed and are provided with plenty of socialisation and enrichment to make their experience with us as pleasant as possible during their stay. They will undergo an assessment period and receive any required medical treatment in readiness for finding the most suitable new home.
