PAWS for Reading
Cheltenham Animal Shelter’s initiative ‘Paws for Reading’ has been running since 2017.
Working alongside Prestbury Library, the PAWS for Reading scheme was set up to help local primary school children with low reading confidence, giving them the opportunity to improve by partnering up with a reading-assistance rescue pet.
During these sessions, children read out loud to one of our rescue animals instead of their teachers or parents, which gives them the freedom to relax and enjoy the experience without the pressures of expectation.
Positive benefits of regular reading for children can include:
- Supported cognitive development
- Improved language skills
- Preparation for academic success
- Increased concentration and discipline
- Improved imagination and creativity
- Cultivating lifelong love of reading
Allowing children to read to one of our animals can provide therapeutic benefits, lowering their stress levels and therefore any concerns or worries they may have about reading, making the activity more enjoyable. Plus, the rescue pets get the bonus of some stress-free kennel respite – a win-win for all!
